Prime Minister Tillman Thomas will deliver an address to officially declare open Media Week 2012.
The office of the Grenadian leader confirmed Friday that the Prime Minister will deliver an address on radio and television this Sunday setting the week in motion. Prime Minister Thomas also holds the portfolio of Minister of Information.
He has advocated the need for a Media Policy as well as a Freedom of Information Act in Grenada.
Recently, Prime Minister Thomas announced his Government’s intention to remove criminal libel from the law books here. Following that announcement MWAG had issued a statement welcoming the announcement.
Advocates and practitioners here have been campaigning for the removal of criminal libel from the law books for some time.
The Intentional Press Institute (IPI) recently announced plans to lobby several Governments in the region to have the law remove.
Prime Minister Thomas’s address on Sunday will be followed by a packed week of activities involving media practitioners ranging from schools visits and donations; to family fun day and river tubing.
Media week this year is being observed under the theme “Media in a Challenging World” adopted from the IPI World Congress being held in Trinidad from June 23rdto the 26th, 2012.©
