Some Caribbean HIV statistics

  • Approximately 240,000 people in the Caribbean living with HIV.
  • The Caribbean is the 2nd highest region with adult HIV Prevalence; the first is sub Saharan Africa.
  • HIV infections in the Caribbean has declined slightly from an estimated 20,000 in 2001 to 17,000 in 2009.
  • AIDS-related deaths in the Caribbean fell from an estimated 19,000 in 2001 to 12,000 in 2009.
  • Unprotected sex between men and women – especially paid sex – is thought to be the main mode of HIV transmission in the Caribbean.
